What home appliances use the most energy?

Today, we have many electrical devices and appliances in our home. We live our lives clicking, switching and plugging in and out. However, most people don’t realise that each appliance or device uses a different amount of electricity.

Typically, a home will use 4,200 kWh in a year.

Some homes will use more, some will use less energy. However, the key to understanding your home appliance energy usage is the number of kWh.

To better use your electricity, there are two simple steps to take.

• Understand your high and low usage appliances

When you buy your next appliance or device, make sure that it is as energy efficient as possible so its doesn’t as much electricity as what it is replacing. Home electrical appliances that heat or cool use the most is a great tip to remember. Kettles, Fridges, Ovens & Microwaves top the list.

• Use them in a smart way

So once you know which appliances use the most, then the next step is to use them smartly. Maybe use them for a shorter period of time – such as an electric shower or maybe turn down the heat! – like a Washing Machine. Look at the Setting that you use too. Do you use a setting for a Full Appliance when maybe another setting would work just as well. Do consider energy saving home appliances. Limit the number of electrical appliances used at home at the same time. Also consider do you benefit from cheaper electricity at night?
